Cultural

Historical Background

We, people of Siltie origin and their families, are residing in the Washington DC and Metro Surrounding Area and have recognized the need of an association (EDER) in which we could support one another in case of tragedies as is the case in our culture back home. This recognition of idea led us to establish an association under which Siltie community members shall become together and helping each other.

Establishment of Association

The Siltie’s and their Families Emergency Mutual Relief Association (SFEMRA) was established in the year 2000 as EDIR which is a community-based association to respond to the needs of a growing Ethiopian Siltie Community in the Washington DC and Metro Surrounding Area. SFEMRA is governed by the bylaw and legally registered with Non-Profit organization as the tax-exempt (501-c(3)) in 2009 with the objective of social service through participation and sustainable integrity and development. Over the past several years it has made significant contribution to the social benefits such as supporting one another in case of tragedies like death, mourning, accident and etc. likewise sharing joyful like celebrating wedding or graduation ceremony and etc. throughout our community. Having these kinds of social supports and services in our association led us to shape our future, integrity and of course to be closer, to know each other and supportive between our community members.
